Severe stress can be seen on a PET scan. Researches examine the functioning of the brain when a patient is relaxed and compare the images to when the same patient has a flashback from PTSD. The limbic system “lights” up with flashbacks and stress. The limbic system is responsible for relaying pain – thalamic system – emotion – amygdala – and memory – limbic system. Also the flight fright fight response goes “haywire” No wonder the pain alarm system is overactive.
To make matters worse, the areas in the brain responsible for logic, reasoning and being able to plan and organize – they “go dim”
